Laitinen & Rissanen: Osaatko wikitellä? – Selvityksiä sosiaalisen median käytöstä korkeakoulusektorilla

SMOOT-projekti välitti esityksensä verkon kautta. Projektissa on ollut lukuisia toimijoita, ja nyt esiteltiin selvitys siitä, kuinka yleistä on sosiaalisen median käyttö korkeakouluissa. Tavoitteena oli selvittää, kuinka sosiaalista mediaa voidaan hyödyntä tehokkaammin korkeakoulujen opetuksessa ja oppimisessa. Samoin on selvitetty, millaista osaamista (kompetensseja) sosiaalisen median mukaan ottaminen vaatii. Asiantuntijakirjoitelmien kautta kartoitettiin myös näkemyksiä siitä, miten sosiaalinen media muuttaa opetusta.

Osaatko Wikitellä? -verkkokysely tuotti mm. seuraavia tuloksia.

78% on käyttänyt viestintätyökaluja kuten Mese, RSS, Skype.
64% on käyttänyt verkko-oppimisympäristöjä kuten Moodle, WeCT.
Videoverkkopalveluja, kuten YouTube, oli käyttänyt 61%.
Vähiten vastaajat olivat käyttäneet yhteisöllistä merkintää (social bookmarking) kuten del.icio.us, ja sosiaalisen verkostoitumistyökaluja.
Käyttö oli yleisintä vapaa-aikana, toiseksi yleisintä opiskelussa.
Työn tekemisen tukena käytti vain 41% vastaajista.
Mitä iäkkäämpi vastaaja oli, sitä vähempää sosiaalisen median käyttö oli.

Web 2.0 -sovellusten opetuskäytön selvitys tuotti vastaavasti seuraavia alustavia tuloksia.

Opetuskäytössä oli ollut wiki, blogi, pikaviestimet, del.icio.us, YouTube, RSS-syöte, Second Life, videoneuvotteluohjelmat/palvelut.
Palaute Web 2.0 -palveluiden opetuskäytöstä oli ollut enimmäkseen positiivista.
Palautteessa on mainittu, että on kiinnostavaa ja tarpeellista mutta opettajan osaaminen nähtiin vaikuttavan suuresti.

Mari Koistinen: Blogit ja kuluttajan rooli

Työryhmä jatkuu suomeksi. Himoblogaaja Mari (Mieto marinadi, Mari Koo, Kulutusjuhla.com, jne) tutkii blogeja ja kuluttamista. Blogeissa voidaan purkaa kulutuskokemuksia, julkaista trendijuttuja tai jopa tehdä kuluttamiseen liittyviä sarjakuvia.

Puskaradio, word-of-mouth, eWOM, jne. Näillä viitataan blogien luonteeseen mm. kuluttamisen näkökulmasta. Blogit ovat tehokas tiedonvälittäjä ja markkinointikeino mutta niillä ollaan myös yhteydessä muiden kuluttajien kanssa ja niissä kuullaan asiakkaan ääni. Myös Google-haussa tuloksien etupäähän sijoittuvat blogit. Olisiko jopa niin, että hakukoneiden kautta kuluttaja löytää ensin jonkun muiden kommentit hamuamastasi tuotteesta ja vasta sitten tuotteen valmistajan tai markkinoijan sisällöt?

Mikko Hautakangas: The "Activated Audience" of Big Brother Finland

Mikko Hautakangas tells us about his doctoral study project related to the Big Brother Finland. The television show Big Brother could be seen as an example of "media product of the new millenium" in terms of multimodality, addressing the ordinary people and participating etc. So are the active audience of media studies changing, Mikko asks. He discusses on the relationships between the producers and the audience of the Big Brother, and applies Henry Jenkins´s concept of participatory culture in order to understand these relationships between audiences, production and "texts".

Mikko´s term "activated audience" refers both to the active role of the audience, and the active role of the production in inviting and governing the audience. Being activated audience involves for instance interactivity and critical relationships towards the production, tuning into the same discourse with the text, and thirdly, playing the media game. The focus of this kind of media consumption or reception is on the relationships with the media, not on the media text itself.

Sari Östman: Significances of Life Publications

Sari Östman introduces us her master´s thesis project, which main question is, how are Finnish women like as Internet life publishers. Sari has studied this topic by e-mail interviews and by analysing life publications in the net.

As a result Sari has found three significances of life publishing related to
- writing as personal life technology
- (artificial) interaction with the readers
- publicity in order to reach "the others"

Sari points out a special ambivalence in doing life publishing: the interviewed writers liked the texts their published to be treated as private, while it is in their own hands how private or public their texts in the end are. So what does this being "privately in public" means, Sari asks. As conclusion for her presentation Sari brings out a question dealing with media literacy: is it about reading media or living in media?

Leena Rantala: Digital Literacies in Third Spaces of the Information Society

Leena Rantala presented her doctoral project which studies among other things relationship between institutional education and new literacy practices.

Leena's research questions are:

What kind of digital literacies children and adults are practicing and learning in educational settings?

What kinds of digital literacies children and adults are practicing and learning in everyday life?

What does it mean for them to be digitally literate or illiterate?

The framework includes digital literacies such as academic, cognitive, emansipatory, functional and romantic. It also covers fields of participation such as cultural, economic, educational, institutional, political and social. By the concept of 'Third Spaces' Leena means spaces for identity construction, meaning-making, and pedagogy too.

Korhonen & Rantala: New Literacies and Old Conceptions of Knowledge in School

Vesa Korhonen brought up important divide in his presentation. There are old and new knowledge conceptions in school. The traditional standard paradigm includes transmission of knowledge etc. Instead, the reflective knowledge creation paradigm concentrates more in participation.

Media producation in school opens new literacy practices such as creative mediawriting, collaborative design/planning and multimodal expression. The presentation was concluded with a demand that we need to shift from media producation literacies to reflective knowledge creation paradigm.

In order to define literacies, Michele and Colin are referring to James Paul Gee´s idea of the Discourse with capital letter d as "ways of being in the world". That reminds of Paulo Freire´s view of literacy too, I think.

Professori Juha Suoranta avasi seminaarin heittäen ilmoille monenlaisia kysymyksiä. Pitäisikö lukutaidon käsitteestä kiinnostuneiden pohtia lukutaito-termin loppuosaa, taitoa, sen sijaan että keskityttäisiin "lukemiseen"? Mitä siirtymä vastaanoton kulttuurista osallistumisen kulttuuriin merkitsee vaikkapa kasvatukselle? Millaisia digitaalisia kuiluja tässä uudessa kulttuurisessa tilanteessa syntyy? Ynnä muuta.. Hienoa päästä kuulemaan ja keskustelemaan muiden muassa näistäkin kysymyksistä tämänpäiväisessä seminaarissa!

Michele Knobel is Professor of Education at Montclair State University in New Jersey, where she coordinates the graduate and undergraduate literacy programs. Colin Lankshear is Visiting Scholar at McGill University in Montreal, Canada and professor of Literacy and New Technologies at James Cook University, Australia. Their current research agenda focuses on new literacies and other social practices involving digital technologies under emerging conditions of social media and Web 2.0 and the philosophy and conduct of teacher research. Their recent books include A Handbook for Teacher Research (2004), and New Literacies: Everyday Practices and Classroom Learning (2nd edition, 2006). They are also editors in A New Literacies Sampler (2007)(http://www.soe.jcu.edu.au/sampler/).
